Sustainability Matters

Sustainability Matters in Stafford Borough was established in 2003 as an umbrella organisation to represent the community of Stafford Borough on sustainability issues. We are a non-party political group open to any individual, organisation and business sharing our passion for improving our future. We recognize the many urgent problems facing humanity and other living things on this planet, and strive for ecologically sound solutions that offer hope for a better future.
We want to help create a community in Stafford Borough that is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable, one that is shaped by the people who live here, and respects the vital importance of our natural environment.

  • Members of such a community should feel part of nature and not above it.

  • The economy should not aim for constant growth on the conventional model but instead be low-carbon and low-waste, and encourage the local production and distribution of goods and services.

  • The quality of life should be based on simpler, slower-paced, healthier lifestyles, along with cleaner air, water and soil and greater biodiversity and natural beauty.
To these ends we work with local authorities, voluntary organisations, businesses and individuals so that environmentally sound and sustainable practices are encouraged and adopted.

Projects we have initiated or collaborated on include Derrington Way Ahead, Warmer Holmcroft, the Penkside Project, and We Love Littleworth. In 2013 we staged Go Green in Stafford’s Market Square, to promote sustainable transport. We also successfully ran the Stafford Area Save Your Energy website for 10 years, and managed the Stafford Area Community Solar scheme to promote installation of solar PV. The No Planet B Arts Exhibition, now in its 11th year, delivers workshops in schools to support various aspects of sustainability, as well as an annual week-long arts festival with environmental themes. Also we have been running Repair Cafés at various venues throughout Stafford town.
